The Charollais breed enjoyed one of its most successful Royal Welsh Shows in recent years, winning the interbreed pairs, the interbreed group of three and the overall reserve interbreed champion in the champion of champions competition.
Female and overall champion from the breed classes was a shearling ewe, Edstaston Dubai II from David Roberts’ Boyo flock, Shropshire. She then teamed up with the male champion, a homebred shearling ram from Michael and Melanie Alford’s Foxhill flock, to defeat representatives from all 48 breeds competing at the show when clinching the interbreed pairs title.
Edstaston Dubai II was purchased as a ewe lamb by Mr Roberts from the Oktoberfest sale from her breeder, Robert Gregory. She is sired by Boyo Commander and went on to claim reserve champion in the champion of champions competition.
The male champion and reserve breed champion was a well-grown shearling ram by Foxhill Chief from the Alford family and he was part of the winning interbreed pair.
Breed class judge, David Sloan from Dumfries found it a hard choice between this shearling ewe and the second placed ewe, Edstaston Diamonte, also a purchased by David Roberts at the same sale. She followed her pen-mate through to take the reserve female title. “These shearlings were both lovely examples of the breed, feminine yet well fleshed and perfectly presented,” commented Mr Sloan after judging.
Paul Curran, Brecon, secured another major accolade by winning the interbreed group of three with a trio from the Wernfawr Flock. Included in the team were both his first prize ram lamb and ewe lamb, each sired by the 10,000gns Cavick Da Vinci Code.
The reserve male champion ticket went to Nick Layton’s Foxholes shearling ram, which stood second in his class. For Herefordshire-based Mr Layton, this was just his second time showing at the Royal Welsh and he was delighted with this accolade for his homebred tup sired by Loanhead Washington and out of a Robleston ewe.
The senior ram class went to Boyo Commander, exhibited by the Sercombe family, Leicestershire. This stock sire is by Oakchurch Apache.
James Danforth, Yorkshire, rounded off the awards by winning the senior ewe class with a homebred Lodgehill female by Foxhill A-One.
