‘Sassy’ Scottish ewe tops CCM Charollais Society show and sale

Standing firmly in the spotlight at CCM Skipton’s annual Autumn show and sale of pedigree Charollais females on behalf of the Charollais Sheep Society on the 11th October was Hannah Jackson, of Messrs Sloan and Jackson, Rigghead flock, Collin, Dumfries.

The 2500gns sale leader from Hannah Jackson had earlier been tapped out as first prize shearling ewe and overall champion by show judge Robert Whittaker, a fellow Scottish Borders farmer from Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, who runs the Hundalee flock of 50 Charollais.

Robert enthused at the high standard of entries. He said: “The shearling I placed champion showed great breed characteristics – sassy, with correctness, and fantastic top line, loin and full gigot with good tight skin. A real eye-catcher. The overall show of sheep forward for sale was a great representation of the breed and this showed with a full ringside of buyers and a good solid trade throughout.”

Robert’s pick, a February-born triplet, is by Skyefall Bandit – bought from Stuart Ramsey, Kelso, two years ago, out of a Foxhill ewe by Thackwood U Corker and purchased as a lamb for 1900gns. In-lamb with twins to the Logie Durno Craftsman, a stock tup bought for 3500gns, she travels to Cockermouth after being knocked down to David Norman to join his Kirkhouse flock.

Their eight shearling entries drew a lot of attention, with a Logie Durno Ultimatum twin daughter, out of a Glyn Coch Vagabond ewe and carrying twins to Artnagullion Carnival Chaos, taking fourth place and second top call at 1700gns. She sold to T Hunter, Hunmanby, for his Skelton Whin flock.

Another from the Rigghead pen made 1700gns

A Rigghead ewe by Dafolog Allstar, out of a 4500gns Logie Durno ewe by Foxhill Va Va Voom, carrying a single lamb also to Carnival Chaos, made 1600gns, while Skyefall Bandit featured again when one of his daughters carrying triplets sold at 1550gns, three others reaching 1000gns twice and 800gns. A further sale at 900gns, another Dafolog Allstar daughter, carrying a single Carnival Chaos lamb, brought Messrs Sloan and Jackson a leading consignment average of £1450.31.

Also flying the Scottish flag was Ben Radley, Loaningfoot flock, Georgetown, Dumfries, who was joint second top call at 1700gns and reserve overall champion with his second prize shearling ewe, a powerful Moelfryn Biggar twin daughter out of a homebred ewe by Oakchurch Royal Ryan. She is scanned carrying a single lamb to Thackwood Duke and travels back over the border with Stuart Ramsay to Falsidehill Farm, Kelso.

Their third prize ewe by Foulrice Aristocrat reached 850gns.The same team, led the ewe lamb section on price at 800gns for the second prize winner, sired by Lowereye Buzz from a Mendip Wellington ewe. This triplet sold to G and S Sinclair, Castle Douglas. Next best was by the third prize Foulrice Aristocrat daughter out of a homebred ewe to Foulrice Titus, which secured a hammer price of 750gns.
