Jonathan Wales and Sons continued their good season at the commercial sale held at Carlisle (Saturday 30th August) with a top of 1200gns for a shearling tup sired by Gorteen Blockbuster. The tup heads down to Leicestershire with David Thornley. Two further shearlings from the same pen made a 1000gns apiece, both sired by the home-bred tup, Thackwood Bangkok.
A further two shearling rams hit the 1000gns mark, the first for J P Graham and Son’s Wreay flock from Cumbria and the other from David and Johnathan Norman’s Kirkhouse flock, both selling to commercial flocks.
The entry of empty ewes found strong demand with 100% clearance. Once again topping this section was the Thackwood flock with trade hitting 860gns, 820gns and 800gns.
Trade was hampered by the BTV restrictions, with only one buyer from Scotland and a reduced entry. Hopefully next year will see easier trading conditions for all.
Averages: shearling rams £925.31; ram lambs £516.33; females £602.79 (Harrison and Hetherington).
