Wernfawr Chieftain, a shearling ram from Paul Curran, Talgarth, Brecon, was crowned champion Charollais before going on to top all breeds at the NSA early sale at Brecon on 4th August, having sold for 3500gns.

From a competitive class of shearling rams, judge, Victoria Ashmore of the Micklehills flock found her champion. Sired by Glyn Coch Ace and out of a Dalby bred Edstaston Tulloch daughter, he finds his new home with the Springfield flock of G C and G Y Jones, Newchurch West, Chepstow.

Next best at 1100gns was a shearling from C W Marwood and Son, Whenby, York. The Foulrice shearling, sired by the homebred Foulrice Aristocrat and out of a homebred Cardoonan Vermont daughter, had a short journey home with purchasers A H J Jones and Son, Trefeinion, Brecon.

Also, at 1100gns was a shearling ram from the Jones’ Springfield flock. This one is sired by Lowerye Troubadour and out of a homebred Foulrice sired ewe. He was snapped up by D A Evans and Partners, Llancair Kilgeddin, Abergavenny. Another shearling the same way bred out of the Springfield pen capped at 1000gns, this one finding his new home with D T Davies and Son, Trecastle, Brecon.

A pair of shearling rams then shared a 1000gns price tag, both of which came from Deborah Whitcher, Skewsby, York. Both the Galtres shearling rams are sired by Oldwood Bansky and out of homebred Moss Side Valiant daughters. The first through was sold to G Davies and Co, Llangadog, Carmarthenshire, while the next went to S J and R M Lang, Plympton, Devon.
Further tups capped at 950gns several times with shearlings from the Foulrice flock and the Robleston flock of R G and R A Jones and Son, Camrose, Haverfordwest, with buyers tentative to cross into four figures for their purchases. Shearling rams averaged £850 with a clearance of 87.5%.
Trade on ram lambs was selective with the best two ram lambs reaching a 700gns ceiling. First at that money was a Wernfawr lamb from Paul Curran, which is sired by Glyn Coch Ace and out of homebred ewe by Wernfawr Stormer who now resides with previous buyers S J and R M Lang.
The second lamb at this price was from the Arbryn flock of Arwyn Thomas and purchased by C H Rees, St Donats, Vale of Glamorgan. This one is by Arbryn Chief and out of a homebred Hyde Vinny daughter.
