Unique Achievement by Charollais Sheep at the Royal Welsh Show

For the first time ever one exhibitor has secured all three sheep interbreed titles at the Royal Welsh Show. This extraordinary achievement was carried off by the Ingram family with their Charollais sheep at this week’s show.

The animals were exhibited by the Bruce and Gregory Ingram, the two sons of William and Carole Ingram from the Logie Durno flock from Pitcaple, near Inverurie in Aberdeenshire. The boys made the 11 hours long journey down with their sheep on Saturday and by Wednesday evening had beaten all 3,200 other sheep entries.
Their first victory came in the RWAS Supreme Pairs Championship which was judged by revered Texel breeder, Mr Duncan Currie from Settle in North Yorkshire. The Champion Charollais, a two-shear ewe named Logie Durno Kate was paired with the Male Charollais Champion a shearling ram, Ffrwd Lord of the Ring. Mr Currie said that is was the ultimate competition and his winning pair were “as near a perfect matched pair, as possible. Both were very good sheep, but the female is an exceptional animal.”

Later in the day this lovely ewe came out in the RWAS Continental Championship under a different judge. This time Mr Patrick Tantrum from Llandrindod Wells in Powys had the honour of selecting the individual sheep champion. He had no hesitation in putting Kate forward for the Champion of Champions award. Later on the ewe came up against the winners of the Native Lowland and Native Upland sections and once again won the approval of Mr Tantrum.

The next day the triple crown was completed with victory in the RWAS Interbreed Group championship under a third judge, Mr Dilwyn John from Merthyr Tydfil. The class is for one male, one ewe and one ewe lamb and the group was joined by their 2nd prize winning lamb to take yet another championship award.

Logie Durno Kate is sired by Rockvilla Golden Promise out of a Rutland ewe and is a cross that bred Logie Durno Jackpot, Champion at the Royal Welsh Show in 2010, Logie Durno Kylie reserve breed champion Royal Welsh 2010, Logie Durno Kings Ransome sold at Worcester in 2010 for 6,200 gns and many other top-priced and prize winning animals.

Ffrwyd Lord of the Ring was bred by Dewi Pritchard Evans from Anglesey and purchased by the Ingrams at the NSA Ram Sale at Builth in September 2011 for 3,200 gns and is sired by a Rhaeadr tup.
Congratulations to the Ingram family on this fantastic triumph and also to Mr Cecil Thomas, the Charollais class judge who picked out the right sheep!
