Strong Trade for Logie Durno Charollais Ewes

The Ingram family from Logie Durno Farm, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire enjoyed a total clearance, 12 sheep over £1,000 and buyers from Ireland, Holland and Belgium at their Production Sale of in-lamb Charollais ewes and ewe lambs in Ludlow Market at the weekend (18th October 2014). In line with their move to predominantly later lambing ewes for shearling ram production, they offered for sale the majority of the December lambing ewes and shearlings.

Topping the sale at 1,500 gns was a full sister to their Interbreed Champion at the Royal Welsh Show in 2012.  This 2012 bred ewe was by Rockvilla Golden Promise out of a Rutland ewe and was carrying triplets to Wernfawr OMG at purchase at 3,200 gns from the Worcester Premier sale this year.  Buyer for her was Mr Ben James from Tenbury Wells, near Worcester.

Taking the next three top-priced ewes, was Mr Alun Jones from Glan-y-Mor, Talsarnau, Gwynedd for his recently formed flock.  First on his list at 1,450 gns was a 2012 born ewe by the Irish ram, Bawnard Bolt out of a Crogham Hannibal ewe.  She had the added attraction of carrying twins to the Royal Welsh Interbreed champion ram lamb, Logie Durno Officer.

Mr Jones carried along this line with another daughter of Bolt, at the same price, this time out of a Crogham ewe but again in lamb to that outstanding ram, Officer.  Last on his list was the top-priced shearling ewe at 1,480 gns.

One of a number of buyers from over the water was Mr David Darker and Richard Allen from County Wicklow.  They put in the final bid of 1,440 gns for an embryo transfer 2013 ewe by Loanhead Midas Touch out of a ewe which was reserve champion at the Royal Welsh Show as a lamb in 2011.  This one was carrying a single to Wernfawr OMG.

Going back to the Scottish flock of Mr Darling from Duns, Berwickshire at 1,400 gns was another Loanhead Midas Touch 2013 born ewe, out of the Crogham ewe and in-lamb to Logie Durno Officer.

Next in the prices at 1,350 gns was a massive ewe lamb sired by Crogham Lambert.  David Roberts from Kenley in Shropshire was her buyer.  Earlier in the day he also purchased the ewe lamb’s dam for 1,100 gns; a top breeding ewe by Rockvilla Golden Promise whose progeny have sold up to 5,600 gns.

Two Charollais in-lamb shearling ewes topped the joint production sale held at Builth Wells Market at the weekend.  (19th October 2014).

From Mrs Jennifer Curtis’s excellent pen of 15 in-lamb shearling ewes from Evesham, Worcestershire, the one that caught the eye of Northern Irish breeder, Mr Trevor Bell from Co Down was a Ffrwd Madison daughter.  She was carrying triplets to the Three Counties Show interbreed champion and Royal Welsh Male Champion of 2012, Elmwick Mr McGregor.  The Elmwick finished with an average of £529.50.

Geldards grasp double glory at Skipton Charollais females highlight

Breed mainstays, the Geldard family from Cumbria, clinched a memorable championship and reserve championship double at the milestone 10th anniversary show and sale of pedigree breeding females staged under the auspices of the British Charollais Sheep Society at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, Oct 1)

Father and son John and Richard Geldard, who run the Wraycastle flock at Low Foulshaw Farm, Gilpin Bridge, Kendal, won the Skipton title, the latest of many at the North Yorkshire venue, with their first prize shearling ewe, a December, 2012-born daughter and one of triplets by the family’s Parkgate Jack, their top-performing senior stock ram for three years and himself by the highly regarded Ballyhibben Paddy Power. The dam is a Banwy Immense-sired ewe.  Scanned carrying twins to Galtres Never Say Never Again, purchased for 2,500gns at this year’s Worcester Premier Sale, the victor sold for 720gns to Messrs Beaumont of Longridge, Preston.  Another same way bred Wraycastle shearling ewe, just two days younger than the champion, picked up first prize honours in a special anniversary show class open to members of the society’s northern region, which covers Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria.  Also scanned carrying twins to Galtres Never Say Never Again, the ewe was then awarded the reserve championship by the show judge, British Charollais Sheep Society chairman David Mawhinney, who runs the Rockvilla pedigree flock in Newtonlands, County Down, and had travelled over specially for the landmark fixture, which was sponsored by JG Animal Health.

He described his two principals as “super sheep with very little between them.” His chosen reserve champion, which was also the second prize shearling ewe, by Highway Lord Lucan, made top price in sale of 950gns to Messrs Tindall of Linton Springs, Wetherby.

Breed stalwarts Charles and Valerie Marwood, whose Foulrice flock is based at Whenby, York, were again prominent among the prizewinners with the third prize shearling ewe, by their own Foulrice Lightening, out of a Foulrice Eboracum-sired ewe. Scanned carrying twins to Lowereye Neil’s Favourite, she was sold for 550gns to S Cummings.  Another Marwood shearling ewe, a Langstone K2 daughter also scanned in-lamb to Lowereye Neil’s Favourite, was awarded second prize in the northern region show class.  On a good day, the Marwoods were also responsible for the first and second prize ewe lambs, two further Foulrice Lightening daughters. The red rosette winner, out of an Edstaston Head Master-sired ewe sold for 600gns to Messrs Tindall with the runner-up making 400gns, claimed by Kenton Foster for his new Kentons Flock.

The third prize ewe lamb was shown by Cambridgeshire vendor, DC Green, of Sutton, near Ely. By Dalby Lazelle, out of a Rockville Golden Promise-sired ewe, the December-born lamb was sold for 480 gns to JD & V Towers & Son, of Farleton, Lancashire.

Northamptonshire’s Geoff and Carol Watson, who run the Sulwood pedigree flock at Eastbrook Hill, Desborough, stepped up with the first prize ewe, born in December 2011 to a show-winning sire, while her dam, Sulwood Kinki Kitten, was interbreed champion at the Royal Norfolk and supreme terminal sire female at the Great Yorkshire. Colin and Ros Bowen, of Gwyndy, Llandeloy, took second in class with a ewe by Foulrice Leroy and scanned with twins to Gwyndy Kadinsky.

The remaining prize winner, third in the northern region show class, was a shearling ewe from the North Yorkshire Halfpenny flock of husband and wife team Stephen and Nicola Hodgson, of Patrick Brompton, Bedale. By Springfield Inxs, out of an Aberkinsey Earth Mover-sired dam, the ewe is scanned in-lamb to Halfpenny Kaiser, the 2013 Great Yorkshire Show terminal champion.

Other notable prices included Messrs DC&J Green, from the Regan flock, who made the long journey north from Ely in Cambridgeshire and sold a Dalby Lazelle sired lamb for 480gns.

Colin Bowens’ Gwyndy flock had 520gns for a Millhouse Musician sired shearling sold scanned twins to Gwyndy Kadinsky, whilst Mark Worthington made 480gns from a shearling by Dudston Jasper in lamb to Galtres Lynz Unstoppable.

Next best was the top-priced shearling ewe who sold for 1,750 gns to N & J Carragher from Lochmaben, Lockerbie.  This ewe was sired by Parkgate Kaiser out of a Lornbrook were and scanned carrying twins to Ballyhibben O’Driscol.

Local breeder Stuart Mair from Waterbeck Lockerbie was the buyer at 1,700 gns of a 2-shear ewe by Foulrice Knockout .  Her dam was purchased at the Southam Flock dispersal sale for 1,500 gns.

Going to 900 gns on two occasions was another new breeder Mr C McKeague from Cumnock in Ayrshire.  His first choice was an older ewe by Kings Land Leading Light out of a Southam Exotic dam, carrying a single to Ballyhibben O’Brian.  Also at 900 gns was a shearling ewe this time by Rhaeadr Midas, a favourite in the sale.

A lovely Foulrice Knockout 3-year old ewe was on the buying list of David Sloan from Rigghead, Dumfries who went to 950 gns for this triplet carrying ewe.  He also took a shearling ewe at the same money; an embryo born ewe by Rhaeadr Midas carrying twins to Carnew Nijinsky.
