Registering Charollais Sheep

THE CHAROLLAIS YEAR

from 7th July/August
Mating or AI of your Charollais flock most likely took place during these months. Write up a full list of the identification of the ewes mated and to which sire. Check that all ewes mated are full pedigree registered. Check that all stock sires are full pedigree registered.

SERVICE DATE

Council has set an official start date for the breeding season for Charollais.  This will be, each year  the 7th July.
Pedigree Charollais sheep should therefore neither be artificially inseminated nor run with the ram prior to this date.
A check may be undertaken on breeders’ farms, at any time during the breeding season, to see how many and which lambs they have on the ground.  This is to ensure breeders enter the correct date of birth on their birth notification forms.  These checks will apply equally to flocks lambing in December, January, February etc.

September / October
Check ewe lambs to choose which ones you wish to full pedigree register this year.

** Suggest you order tags for your lambing. Remember to include your six digit UK sheep holding reference.

Lambs born from 1st December 2007 should be numbered 8001, 8002, 8003, 8004 etc.

fee £10 (plus VAT) for each ewe.

EMBRYO TRANSFER & ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION

Applications to register lambs born by embryo transfer and / or artificial insemination must be accompanied by a certificate signed by the veterinary surgeon carrying out the work. This must certify the identity of the sire and dam and recipient ewe where applicable.

RAMS

If your lambs are sired by natural service by a ram not in your ownership, then you must apply for a "Ram Service Form" which should be completed and signed by the ram owner. This form must be included with registration forms.

Ram Service Form

If ewes are purchased from a society sale where details of the service sire are printed in the catalogue, it is not necessary to submit a ram service form to the office.

IDENTIFICATION - DOUBLE TAGGING FROM 11TH JANUARY 2008

Defra have issued new rules for identifying sheep and goats.  From 11th January all animals retained for breeding will be required to have two identical forms of identification.

Therefore Charollais lambs will require two means of identification they may be

1) Two ear tags or 2) One eartag and either a tattoo or an electronic device.

The information on each must be identical, unique to the animal and will consist of :-

UK + flock or herd mark of birth + individual number (up to a maximum of 6 digits).
All unique numbers for UK tags will be allocated by ETAS. These numbers run sequentially year on year and are allocated by your tag supplier at the time of order.

Management Information Management information may be added to the tag, but must not consist of the letters UK and the official information must be clear.

BCSS Information The Society will still require members to have our information on their tag/s. That is their ‘Management’ information and must consist of :-

Flock Reference + four digit number, beginning 8001 for this year.

The majority of tag companies have realised the necessity for management information to be included on the official tags and will print extra lines etc to accommodate this requirement. This requirement is for all breeding animals, identified on or after 11th January 2008.

Slaughter Lambs Lambs that are destined for slaughter will only require one tag. But ordering two complete sets of tags for your flock, may work out less expensive than the cost of individual numbered tags. Check with your tag supplier for prices.

Replacement Tags Replacement tags for double tagged animals – the tag must either be identical to the original tag or two new UK identical tags may be inserted. If a new identity is allocated to the animal, breeders must keep a record of this new number in their holding register.

For pedigree stock we would prefer you to obtain a replacement tag of the same number. Confusion does arise when pedigree animals are given a new identity and cross referencing can get forgotten or muddled. Register Holdings will be required to keep a ‘Holding Register’. This will list a record of replacement or additional means of identification and also movements on and off the holding. NO RECORD OF AN ANIMAL’S INDIVIDUAL NUMBER is required to be recorded.

S Tags There will no longer be a requirement for ‘S’ tags.

TAIL DOCKING
Don’t forget the rules with regard to short tail docking of sheep; you must leave sufficient tail to cover the anus of males and the vulva of females.  For new breeders a warning  - Charollais tails move up as the lamb grows.  Trading Standards do check this at shows and sales and do have the right to request the removal of incorrectly docked animals from the venue.
