Maedi Visna Accreditation Scheme
The Maedi Visna scheme is run by the Sheep and Goat Health Scheme.
Council have discussed the relative merits of keeping the breed within the scheme or coming out. Their unanimous decision was that we should encourage our breeders to retain their MV status and new breeders to join, if possible.
Veterinary advice states that MV is a long term insidious disease and breeders should make every effort to keep the flock free. In different parts of the world it is a major problem and has financial consequences on production; especially in intensively reared stock. As a breed we should aim to maintain our image of high health status animals. If we were to drop the MV accredited status of our flock, exports of sheep to Northern Ireland would be restricted to animals over 9 months of age. If you are experiencing difficulties with the scheme, then please do contact the office without delay.
If your flock is not part of the scheme then you may like to consider joining.
