Arbryn Charollais Ewe tops Hereford Sale at 2,700 gns

The Arbryn Flock of Arwyn Thomas from Whitland in Carmarthenshire continued their highly successful year with the top price at the joint production sale of Charollais in-lamb ewes held at Hereford Market at the weekend (21st October).  Leading the figures at 2,700 gns was a shearling ewe, sired by the highly successful stock sire, Shamrock Northern Star out of a Highway ewe and described as ‘one of the best that I have sold’ by the vendor.  She was carrying twins to Brettles Sherman, purchased at the Worcester Premier Sale this year for 7,000 gns.  Buyer for her was new breeder, Mark Hughes from Penrhyn, New Quay, Ceredigion.

Buyers were over from Northern Ireland and Holland and they took the next two highest priced animals.  At 1,800 gns was another Shamrock Northern Star shearling ewe, also in-lamb to Brettles Sherman.  This one was out of an outstanding Castellau ewe and putting in the final bid was Ian Craig from the Ballynoe House Flock in Co Antrim, Northern Ireland.

A regular buyer of Charollais in the UK is Harry De Vliegher from Holland and his pick at 1,550 gns was a Wernfawr Nijinsky sired shearling ewe from David Curran’s flock in Talgarth, Brecon.  Full brothers to this ewe have sold for 3,700 gns and 1,900 gns and the prospect of her twins sired by Brettles Sherman attracted many interested bidders.

The Castellau flock of Tim Prichard from Glamorgan enjoyed a top price of 950 gns for a shearling ewe out of Castellau My Fair Lady, 1st prize ewe lamb at the Royal Welsh Show in 2012.  Spending some of his takings was Arwyn Thomas, Carmarthenshire.

Noken Farms Ltd from Sinton Green, Worcester went to 950 gns and 900 gns for two shearling ewes from the Wernfawr Flock.  The first was a Glyn Coch Night to Remember sired ewe carrying a single to Wernfawr Nijinsky and the second by Nijinsky and this time with a Brettles Sherman single lamb due.

Just 4 ewe lambs were for sale and these were topped by the last sheep in the ring, a full sister to the 2107 Royal Welsh Interbreed ewe lamb champion from the Castellau Flock.  Going to 900 gns for this lamb by Castellau Rockafella out of a proven dam line with many show successes was Charles Sercombe from Frisby on the Wreake, Melton Mowbray for his Dalby Flock.
