Abryn Flocks tops Hereford Sale

Arbryn Charollais Ewe tops Hereford Sale at 2,000 gns

The Arbryn Flock of Arwyn Thomas from Whitland in Carmarthenshire continued their highly successful year with the top price at the joint production sale of Charollais in-lamb ewes held at Hereford Market at the weekend (15th October).

The sale topper was a March born shearling ewe by Arbryn Mythos and scanned in lamb to Rhaeadr Real Deal purchased at the breed’s Premier Sale in July for 6,200 gns.  Putting in the final bid over the phone of 2,000 gns were Messrs RG and RA Jones and Son from Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire for their Robleston Flock.

Next best at 1,500 gns came from the same pen; Emyr Hughes, from the Bronwydd Flock in Pembrokeshire selected a shearling ewe out of the top-price ewe at the Parkgate Flock sale in 2014.  Also born in March this shearling was sired by Ballyhibben O’Driscol out of an Arjane Kukri ewe and was scanned carrying twins to the Rhaeadr sire.

The Arjane flock had a number of high-priced animals including 1,000 gns for a striking daughter of Elmwick Kit Kat a top show ewe.  The Bronwydd Flock added her to his purchases and should be having a single lamb from this ewe again by the high-price Rhaeadr ram.  Also buying out of the Arjane pen was Society Inspector, Mr Robert Gregory.  He added two shearling ewes to his Edstaston Flock one at 1,000 gns. Out of one of Arbryn’s best breeding line this shearling ewe was sired by Shamrock Northern Star out of a Galtres Dominator ewe.  She was carrying twins to Rhaeadr Real Deal.  Mr Gregory’s other purchase was also sired by Northern Star this time out of Elmwick Kit Kat and cost 900 gns.

Northern Irish breeder, Drew Cowan was also a purchaser of two Arjane shearlings for his prize-winning Tullyear Flock.  His first at 1,100 gns was a further ET shearling ewe by Shamrock Northern Star and scanned with twins to Real Deal.  He went on to secure a Kit Kat daughter for 750 gns, this time with a single to Real Deal.

Other vendors at this joint production sale enjoyed the buoyant trade.  David Curran’s Wernfawr Flock from Brecon in Powys topped his day at 1,400 gns for a Wrenvale Mad 4 Ewe daughter scanned to top producing sire, Wernfawr Nijinsky.  This shearling ewe sold to Ffynnon Aur Farming Ltd from Dinas Powis in Glamorganshire.  Another similarly bred shearling ewe made 1,350 gns when purchased by Ben Radley from Loaningfoot in Dumfries.

Scottish breeders Alan and Herbie Kennedy saw their Carnew Nijinsky shearling ewe in lamb to Ballyhibben Paddy Power sell for 1,150 gns to Janet and Jonathan Corbett from Newent, Gloucestershire.   Jennifer Curtis from the Elmwick flock in Evesham, Worcester topped her trade at 900 gns for a Wernfawr Magnum triplet, scanned carrying three lambs to her new stock ram Foulrice Raphael.  Buyer for her was Kingswater Livestock from Kingston Seymour in North Somerset.  The Elmwick Flock topped the small entry of ewe lambs at the sale, selling one of this year’s show lambs for 600 gns to Mr R J Mills, Craven Bridge, Lampeter.
